Apex Psychology offers several psychological assessments options at our Burwood and Park Central clinics. Our goal is to find an individualised approach with our assessments so we can provide clear and practical recommendations or next steps based on outcomes.

At times the options available can be confusing. This can add to the stress of the process of seeking a psychological assessment. We have prepared this guide to outline the assessment options.

All psychological assessments are undertaken by skilled registered and clinical psychologists. Some assessments can also be undertaken at a reduced cost by intern psychologists (provisional psychologists who practice under supervision). A comprehensive report is prepared covering the assessment findings and recommendations.

At Apex Psychology we have options for child and adolescent assessments and adult assessments, which are outlined below. Combination assessments (such as child ADHD and autism assessments) can also be arranged.

Child and adolescent Cognitive Assessments

Cognitive assessments can test for IQ and learning (including giftedness, intellectual disability and specific learning disorders such as dyslexia, dysgraphia or dyscalculia). We utilise psychometric assessments including the Weschler Intelligence Scale for Children – fifth edition (WISC-5), or the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test – third edition (WISC-3) amongst other tools. These assessments can help gain an understanding of a child’s strengths and/or challenges.

Child and adolescent ADHD assessments

ADHD assessments by psychologists can help to diagnose ADHD. At Apex Psychology we take an individualised approach to child and adolescent ADHD assessment, often including a clinical interview, testing and collection and standardised assessment data. It is important to note that psychologists cannot prescribe medication following these assessments. ADHD assessments can also be undertaken by a paediatrician or child and adolescent psychiatrist (who can then prescribe medication).

Child and adolescent Autism assessments

Autism assessments by psychologists can help to diagnose Autism in children and adolescents. At Apex Psychology we utilise ‘gold standard’ assessments of autism including the Autism Diagnostic Assessment Schedule – 2nd edition (ADOS-2) and the Autism Diagnostic Interview – Revised (ADI-R). Depending on the outcome of the assessment the reports may be used in applications for NDIS funding. Autism assessments can also be undertaken by a paediatrician or child and adolescent psychiatrist.

Adult ADHD assessments

Psychologists can also complete an assessment to diagnose adult ADHD. As noted above, it is important to note that psychologists cannot prescribe medication following these assessments. If seeking treatment with medication is a priority, then it may be better to seek an assessment with a psychiatrist.

Adult Autism assessments

Psychologists can conduct adult autism assessments. Depending on the outcome of the assessment the reports may be used in applications for NDIS funding.

We understand that psychological assessments can be very costly! We have intern psychologists (provisionally registered psychologists completing either masters placement or internship at Apex Psychology) who can complete some of these assessments at a reduced cost.
